Jimmy Morales is a Guatemalan politician who served as the President of Guatemala from 2016 to 2020. He was born on March 18, 1969 in Guatemala City. Before entering politics, Morales worked as an actor and comedian, known for his role in a popular television show in Guatemala.
Morales ran for president as the candidate of the National Convergence Front (FCN), a right-wing political party, in 2015. He won the election in a landslide victory, running on a platform of anti-corruption and tackling crime and violence in Guatemala.
During his presidency, Morales faced numerous challenges, including widespread corruption scandals within his government and efforts to undermine the work of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), a UN-sponsored anti-corruption body. Morales's presidency was also marked by criticism for his handling of social issues, including indigenous rights and environmental protection.
In 2019, Morales declared himself a "disruptor of the system" and faced widespread protests and criticism from the Guatemalan public. He was unable to run for re-election in 2019 and his term ended in January 2020. Since leaving office, Morales has faced multiple corruption charges and legal challenges.
